Basic Tools Used By Level 2 Electricians

An electrician is required to work on a wide variety of jobs, from working on overhead service lines to fixing the wiring inside a building. This means that he is required to have the right tools which will enable him to carry out his work effectively. An important aspect of electrical work is safety and the right tools will ensure that the electrician does not experience shock while working. A level 2 electrician can perform a wide variety of tasks and requires both hand and power tools to successfully complete a job.

Power And Hand Tools

The power tools that are available to electricians today are much smaller than they used to be years ago. Power tools can either be connected to electricity through a cord or they can be cordless. Cordless power tools are preferred more by electricians because they are more convenient and offer mobility while working. These tools use a battery which is charged to produce power.

Hand tools do not use power and are nowadays designed to ensure that injuries to the electrician are minimized while working. Injuries while using hand tools normally occur because there are certain moves that have to be repeated severally.

Basic Tools Used By Electricians

Pliers are a must have for any electrician and the most commonly used are the needle nose and side cutting pliers. Comfort is an important characteristic for any pliers so that the electrician can have a firm grip to enable him carry out his work effectively. A power drill is also a common tool used to drill into concrete or to fasten a fixture. The amount of voltage used on the power drill will depend on what is to be drilled.

Power saws are also commonly used by level 2 electricians in order to cut a variety of items. There are different power saws available such as the spiral saws, the hole saws and the portable band saws.

Identifying The Cause Of The Problem

An electrician cannot fix a problem until he identifies the cause. He therefore will need to use a wire tester in order to know whether there is electricity flowing through the wires. The wire tester will also measure the strength of the electric current and a modern tester will give the electrician a digital reading.

A continuity tester is used to check circuits and fuses which are not working properly. A wire tracer is used to find wires which may be located out of sight such as behind the wall. An electrician can use a multimeter to check the continuity and voltage of the electricity that is flowing through the wires.

Tools That Allow Mobility

A ladder is an important tool for level 2 electricians since they have to reach overhead service lines or climb up to the ceiling. The electrician should use a ladder that is made from material that does not conduct electricity such as wood. He will also need proper lighting when working since he will sometimes have to switch off the power in order to work. If he is working in a dark space, he will need to use a hand held or a head mounted flashlight.

The Importance of Electricians

Ever since Benjamin Franklin went outside with his kite during a thunderstorm, electricity has ruled the world. All you have to do to understand this is to remember what it was like the last time your power went out for an evening. Nothing worked. No computer, no refrigerator and more importantly, no TV. Electricity runs everything important in our lives and when it malfunctions, somebody has to fix it, somebody who knows what they’re doing, that is. Electricity has the power to run things when it works smoothly, but, it can also burn things and kill people if misused. Of all the household accidents in this country, home electrical repairs ranks second in accidents right behind falling off ladders – only home electrical repair accidents are more deadly than falling off ladders.

Good electricians are highly trained individuals with a lot of schooling and practical experience behind them. Before you go sticking your hand into a fuse box, or rewiring the house for power, you have to know a lot about electrical power – the way it moves, how it does what it does, the math and physics behind it and a lot of other things. Everybody feels like a bit of an electrician simply by changing that blown fuse or plugging things in just right or wiring up that complicated TV/VCR/DVD/stereo entertainment center you’ve just bought. You wire it up, plug it in and somehow it all works without any sparks or problems and you feel like you could have been an electrician if you’d really wanted to. Wrong. There is a world of difference between plugging things in and being an electrician.

To begin with the body of mathematics behind electrical work is impressive. Electricity is measured in volts and is a function of voltage, current and resistance – all factors with a complex mathematical relationship. There are laws, not the building codes set in place by municipal governments to insure the safety of houses and commercial buildings, but mathematical laws proven with chalkboards of bizarre looking figures that prove how electricity will function under different circumstances. And there are unions. In fact the Electrical Workers Union (EWU) is one of the strongest unions in America protecting the integrity of the profession from scammers and schemers.

Benefits of Hiring Licensed Electricians

To save a buck or two, many people think they can handle a basic electrical job on their own. It is a bad idea to take on an electrical project, no matter how small, because even a little mistake can lead to serious injuries. When you are not specially trained to work with electricity, it is very easy to make one little mistake, but just one small mistake can blow out all the fuses in your house, electrocute someone, or burn your house down. A mistake made today could even cause problems down the line — unexpectedly!

If you have an electrical problem that needs to be fixed, a new electrical outlet that must be installed, or you need to hook up a new appliance, hire a local electrician. Other than the most obvious safety concerns of working with electricity, there are additional benefits of hiring licensed electricians.

When you hire a licensed electrician, you can feel confident that the job will be completed successfully and in a timely manner, without injury and without property damage. You can rest assured that once the electrician walks out the door, you will not need him back again for that same project. A licensed electrician will pull the correct permits and have the town or city inspector check out his work, ensuring that your project is being done correctly and safely. If an electrician does not want to pull permits or have his work inspected, that is a red flag and you should not hire this person to work in your home or office.

One of the smallest known benefits of hiring licensed electricians is that they are required to have a surety bond. A surety bond provides about $5,000 to a consumer if an electrical contractor starts a job but then refuses to finish. The bond amount is there to help consumers hire another contractor to finish the job. Many unlicensed electricians will not get a surety bond, which is another red flag not to hire this person. Licensed electricians also have to carry insurance, not only to cover themselves if they get injured while working, but the insurance will also cover damage to the homeowner’s property if something breaks while the electrician is working on it.

More benefits of hiring licensed electricians include having someone working on your home that has a high skill level and a vast knowledge of electricity. A licensed electrician has to go through intensive training; both book training and on-the-job training, and must pass a comprehensive test in order to receive their license. A licensed electrician is more apt to follow all the necessary safety requirements to lessen the possibility of on-the-job injury, as well as lessen or eliminate future injury to the consumer because of a faulty electrical job.
